Becahi beats the rain, and two teams, to earn final LVC softball berth

FROM KEITH GROLLER

A busy, but productive day for the Bethlehem Catholic softball team.

The Golden Hawks beat Freedom 3-1 and Easton 6-0 at Pates Park on Sunday to earn the final slot for this week's Lehigh Valley Conference softball tournament.

Heavy rain started falling just after the second game ended.

Becahi will join Northampton, Liberty and Emmaus in the tournament.

The Golden Hawks play Northampton at 5 on Monday night at Pates with Liberty and Emmaus to meet in the 7 o'clock nightcap.

The star of the day for Becahi was sophomore Joelle Morey. Not only was she the winning pitcher in each game, but she also was 2-for-4 at the plate in both and knocked in four runs in the win over Easton.

This is championship week in area softball with the Colonial League to begin play on Tuesday night.

Southern Lehigh and Notre Dame meet at 5 Tuesday followed by Saucon Valley and Pen Argyl at 7.

A championship doubleheader is scheduled for Pates on Thursday with the LVC title game to go first at 5 and the Colonial League at approximately 7.

Neither of last year's champs are in this year's league tournaments. Northern Lehigh won the Colonial League in 2010 and Nazareth won LVC gold.
