Pen Argyl Area High School captures Colonial League baseball crown in final at-bat

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Pen Argyl High School saved the best for last against their arch-nemesis in tonight's Colonial League championship baseball game at Limeport Stadium.

The Green Knights, trailing by a run and being shut out by Northern Lehigh right-hander Jake Kern, the league MVP, rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

Then Pen Argyl junior pitcher Dylan Evans finished off a complete game by getting the Bulldogs' Trevor Yashur to ground out with runners on first and third to end the game and win 2-1. Evans allowed five hits and struck out eight.

Northern Lehigh was the defending league champion while the Green Knights hadn't won the league since 2004.

"We hadn't beaten Northern Lehigh in seven straight games, so it's just great to finally beat them," Evans said. "I'd never won any kind of championship in baseball; it's a remarkable feeling."

The Green Knights' winning rally started with singles by Ryan DeJesso and Conor Gum. Zach Miller then chopped a ball up the middle that Kern tipped to shortstop Eric Snyder as DeJesso scored the tying run, and when the throw to first got away Gum scored the game-winner.

Pen Argyl will open the District 11 Class AA playoff Tuesday against a foe to be determined.
