Academy Awards Recap

FROM LAURA NACHMAN

Academy Awards Recap

Here are some observations about the 84th annual Academy Awards telecast on ABC.

Host Report Card – Billy Crystal turned in a predictable and reliable performance, with his trademark opening movie montage, and his “What Are They Thinking” riff. However, his musical medley about the Best Picture nominees could not be heard, getting drowned out by the orchestra.

Nip Slip – “J-Lo” (Jennifer Lopez) lived up to her nickname with a plunging dress that revealed too much.

Nick Slip – Best Supporting Actor nominee Nick Nolte was scary-looking even for Nick Nolte standards.

Hometown Presenters – Upper Darby’s Tina Fey and Jenkintown’s Bradley Cooper presented a few behind-the-scenes awards together.

Best Dressed- Jessica Chastain, Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow

Hair Report – Presenters Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, and Penelope Cruz all sported new short hair-dos.

Whitney Watch – Whitney Houston was only mentioned in the “In Memoriam” montage, which also included Elizabeth Taylor, Ben Gazzara and former Academy Awards producer, Gil Cates.

ABC Promos – ABC wants you to watch “Revenge,” “GCB,” “Once Upon a Time,” the ABC comedies including “Modern Family,” “Scandal” with Kerry Washington, and “Missing” with Ashley Judd.

Roberto Benigni Award – Jean Dujardin winning Best Actor for “The Artist” over George Clooney (sob).

Former Host Sighting – Former Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres popped up throughout the night in her new JC Penney’s commercials.

Possible Host For Next Year – How about Tina Fey?

Best Actress For Life – I’m sad that Viola Davis did not win for “The Help,”
but it’s hard to begrudge Meryl Streep.
